Doug Turnbull is a professor in the Department of Computer Science<\/a> at Ithaca College<\/a> in upstate New York<\/a>. His main research interests include music information retrieval<\/a>, computer audition<\/a>, machine learning<\/a>, and human computation<\/a>. His current research centers on local music recommendation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2008, Doug graduated with a Ph.D. in computer science from UC San Diego<\/a><\/strong> where he co-founded the interdisciplinary Computer Audition Laboratory (CAL)<\/a> with his advisors Gert Lanckriet<\/a> (Electrical Engineering), Shlomo Dubnov<\/a> (Music) and Lawrence Saul<\/a> (Computer Science). He also worked with Charles Elkan<\/a>, Serge Belongie<\/a>, Sanjoy Dasgupta<\/a>, and Nuno Vasconcelos<\/a>. During his undergraduate studies at Princeton University<\/a><\/strong>, he worked with Perry Cook<\/a> and George Tzanetakis<\/a> on a music analysis software package called MARSYAS<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After graduating from college in 2001, Doug spent a year teaching computer science at Ngee Ann Polytechnic<\/a> in Singapore. In the summer of 2006, he spent three months in Japan as an NSF EAPSI research fellow working with Masataka Goto<\/a> and Elias Pampalk at AIST<\/a> on automatic music segmentation. After his graduate studies, Doug spent time working with Youngmoo Kim<\/a> in the METLab<\/a> at Drexel University and with Dan Ellis<\/a> in LabROSA<\/a> at Columbia University. Prior to starting at Ithaca College, Doug spent two years as a visiting assistant professor at Swarthmore College<\/a>. He recently returned from spending his sabbatical year with Ye Wang<\/a> in the Sound & Music Computing Lab<\/a> at the National University of Singapore<\/a> where he worked on designing a karaoke app for foreign language learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
